How to Complete Your Pathology Collection

Practical guidance on attending your blood test — where to go, fasting requirements, what to bring, how long results take, and what happens next.

Updated today

Your pathology collection is a standard blood test conducted at one of our partner pathology labs. Here's everything you need to know to make the process smooth and straightforward.

Where to Go

Thrive Rx partners with pathology collection centres across Australia. After you've completed your health profile and your clinician has ordered your pathology, you'll receive a pathology request form along with instructions for finding your nearest collection centre.

Most partner labs offer walk-in appointments, though some locations allow online booking. Your instructions will include details on how to find and book at a location near you.

Fasting Requirements

Some biomarkers require fasting for accurate results. If fasting is required for your panel, your instructions will clearly state this. General fasting guidelines:

  • Duration — Typically 10–12 hours before your collection.

  • Water is fine — You can and should drink water during your fast to stay hydrated. This also makes the blood draw easier.

  • Avoid food, alcohol, and sugary drinks — These can affect metabolic and hormonal markers.

  • Medications — Continue taking prescribed medications unless your clinician advises otherwise. If unsure, check with your Thrive Rx clinician before your collection.

Best Time to Test

For the most accurate results — particularly for hormonal markers — morning collections are generally preferred. Your instructions will include recommended timing, but as a general guide, aim to attend your collection between 7:00 am and 10:00 am where possible.

What to Bring

  • Your pathology request form — This is available digitally in the Thrive Rx platform. You can show it on your phone or print a copy.

  • Photo ID — The pathology lab may ask to verify your identity.

  • Your Medicare card — If applicable, bring your Medicare card. Some included tests may be bulk-billed where eligible.

What to Expect at the Collection Centre

The process is the same as any standard blood test:

  • Check in at reception and present your pathology request form.

  • A phlebotomist (trained blood collection professional) will draw a small blood sample from your arm.

  • The process takes approximately 5–10 minutes.

  • You may feel a brief pinch — let the phlebotomist know if you're uncomfortable with needles and they can help.

After Your Collection

  • Results turnaround — Results are typically available within 5–7 business days, though some specialised markers may take longer.

  • Results delivery — Your results are uploaded directly to your personal biomarker dashboard in the Thrive Rx platform. You'll be notified when they're ready.

  • Next step — Once your results are in, your telehealth consultation will be scheduled so your clinician can walk you through the findings.

Tips for a Smooth Collection

  • Drink plenty of water before your appointment (even while fasting) — hydration makes it easier for the phlebotomist to find a vein.

  • Wear a top with sleeves you can easily roll up.

  • If you have a history of feeling faint during blood draws, let the phlebotomist know — they can have you lie down during the collection.

  • Have a snack ready for after, especially if you've been fasting.
