How Prescriptions Are Issued and Dispensed

How the Thrive Rx prescribing process works — from clinical assessment and informed consent through to dispensing by a TGA-compliant Australian pharmacy.

Updated today

Not every Thrive Rx care plan involves medication — but when your clinician determines that a prescription is clinically appropriate, here's how the process works from start to finish.

Clinical Assessment Comes First

No medication is prescribed without a thorough clinical assessment. Before considering any prescription, your clinician will:

  • Review your full health profile, including medical history and current medications

  • Analyse your pathology results and biomarker data

  • Discuss your symptoms, goals, and lifestyle

  • Consider whether lifestyle modifications or non-pharmacological approaches may be appropriate first

Prescribing is always evidence-based and supported by your pathology. Your clinician will only recommend medication when there is a clear clinical rationale.

Informed Consent

If your clinician recommends a prescription, they will explain:

  • What the medication is and how it works

  • The clinical rationale — why it's being recommended for you

  • Expected benefits and realistic timeframes

  • Potential side effects and risks

  • The cost of the medication

  • How it will be monitored as part of your ongoing care

You will be asked to provide informed consent before any prescription is issued. This is particularly important for compounded or off-label medications. You are never obligated to proceed — the decision is always yours.

How Prescriptions Are Issued

Once you've given consent, your clinician issues the prescription electronically. All prescriptions are:

  • Written by an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner

  • Documented in your clinical records within the Thrive Rx platform

  • Transmitted securely to the dispensing pharmacy

Dispensing

Your medications are dispensed by an Australian pharmacy that complies with Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) requirements. This includes:

  • Standard commercially available medications where applicable

  • Compounded medications prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy to current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards where required

Once dispensed, your medication is shipped directly to your nominated delivery address. For details on shipping and handling, see Medication Delivery: What to Expect.

Ongoing Monitoring

Prescribing doesn't stop at the script. Your clinician monitors your response through:

  • Check-in questionnaires at 4 and 8 weeks

  • Clinical reviews at scheduled intervals

  • Repeat pathology to objectively assess how your biomarkers respond

If a medication isn't achieving the desired effect, or if you experience side effects, your clinician will adjust your care plan accordingly.

Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions are issued based on clinical review — not automatically. Your clinician will reassess at each review point whether continuing, adjusting, or discontinuing a medication is appropriate based on your latest results and how you're feeling.
